Personal Trainer Course: Learn to Earn

Posted By Casey Kaldal

personal-trainer-clip-board-learning-earningSkim the newspapers long enough and you’ll see it: another report that we’re all getting too fat. Watch the TV news and you’ll inevitably see a shot of an obese man or woman trudging slowly down the street.

Obesity has become a major problem in North America, with a growing percentage of both young and old weighing too much. Why else would the grocery store shelves be stocked with so many “low-fat” or “fat-free” items?

Unfortunately, these lower-fat foods aren’t working. Waistlines are still expanding at an alarming rate.

But that’s where you come in: You’re looking for a new career. You want to earn a stable income in a growing field. It’s time for you to become a personal trainer.

Talented personal trainers with a strong client base can make upwards of $50,000, $70,000 or more a year. And as we struggle with our obesity problem, it doesn’t look like there will be a decline in the number of potential clients any time soon.

If you’re interested in learning just how much money you can earn as a personal trainer, take my Fitness Business Course for some inspiration. You might be shocked at how lucrative a career you can carve out in this field.

But how do you become a personal trainer?

The best way is to invest some upfront money in a personal trainer course. That way, you can earn certification. This is more important than you might imagine: Personal trainers are far more respected, and can bring in many more clients because of this, if they’ve earned their certification.

A good place to start learning about certification is American Fitness Professionals & Associates. This trade group offers several classes designed to help trainers earn their Certified Professional Trainer designations.

Earning this certification should pay off. According to the fitness association, Certified Professional Trainers working for themselves can earn $40 to $125 an hour. At the same time, accredited trainers can enjoy the freedom and rewards of running their own businesses: They make the decisions, decide how to recruit new clients and reap the rewards when their ideas strike gold.

The good news is that there aren’t many hurdles for you to overcome if you want to take a certification course. American Fitness Professionals & Associates only asks that you be at least 18 years old and have a high school diploma or the equivalent of one.

During a personal trainer course, you’ll learn how to best identify your clients’ needs, and then how to develop exercise routines that help them achieve their goals. You’ll learn how to recruit new clients and how to market your business most effectively. Basically, you’ll learn everything you need to know to start earning money as a personal trainer.

So what are you waiting for?

Do some Internet research and find a personal trainer course near you. Courses offered by the American Fitness Professionals & Associates start as low as $370. That’s a small investment considering that it provides you a gateway to a long-term, stable career.

Great pointers, Casey! I’ve been considering this career route for a while. What are the chances that the market for personal training doesn’t get ’saturated’ too fast?

@Joshua Joshua, at the rate the US and the rest of the world is gaining weight and getting unhealthy I don’t foresee and saturation. Having said that, the sooner you get in, the sooner you can get some needed experience.
