Overcoming the Winter Funk with Health and Nutrition
It started with Thanksgiving, and it’s been downhill ever since. No, I’m not talking about skiing, although I was pretty psyched along with the rest of the United States when Lindsey Vonn became the first American woman to win the downhill event.
Thanks to her general athleticism and that little thing called Olympic competition, I’m pretty sure she hasn’t been binge eating for the last four months. Unfortunately, or fortunately for you, a large number of non-athletes (also known as potential clients) can’t say the same.
When the Winter Blues Set In
The holidays came along, and there were cookies and pie and fruitcake. There were chips and candy on coffee tables as families gathered on the couches in front of football games on 56-inch high-definition televisions with fifteen-hundred-channel cable services. Then on New Year’s Day, the world made a global commitment to eat healthier, swearing off bad foods for 2010 and beyond.
But then the snows came, and they all found themselves trapped in our houses with leftover chocolate and bottles of wine. The winter blues set in, and they didn’t feel like doing anything at all. They curled up in front of the fireplace – or their 56-inch high-definition televisions with fifteen-hundred-channel cable services – and felt sorry for themselves.
It’s a Downhill Spiral
They look out the window and see gray clouds and dirty snow on the side of the road. They gorge themselves on fat and calories to make themselves feel better. Then they step on the scale and see the extra pound that wasn’t there yesterday. So they curl up on the couch and mope, looking out the window at the gray clouds and dirty snow on the side of the road. So they gorge themselves on fat and calories to make themselves feel better.
If only there was some way to help your client out of the funk. If only you could think of some activity that might get their endorphins kicking. If only they could do something – anything – that might replace those blues with euphoria. That’s right: if you haven’t figured it out, I’m talking about exercise.
How Personal Trainer Nutrition Can Help
Your fitness business exists to help clients meet their fitness goals. Customers pay you for advice and motivation. So once you get them off their butts and exercising, say for instance, with a spring fitness boot camp, they’ll start to feel better immediately. Now you can engage your clients in a discussion about personal trainer nutrition, which typically does not involve cookies, pie, fruitcake, chips, candy, chocolate, or wine.
You may find your clients mourning these losses for awhile. Help them get junk food off their minds by throwing them into a rigorous exercise routine that keeps them so busy, they don’t have time to think about food. Throw in another fitness boot camp, and they will jump for joy and hug you.
Earning Your Sports Nutrition Certification Improves the Quality of Your Advice
Okay, maybe that client is more likely to shoot daggers at you with her eyes, or even call you names from the elliptical, rather than to hug or praise you. She’s working hard up there, thanks to all the cookies and pie and whatnot, and that’s making her tired and cranky. But you’re a professional, so you can take it. You know what’s coming in a couple of months. For today, once they finish with the machine – and that temper tantrum – you can move on to some nutrition advice. Your sports nutrition certification will allow you to give clients better quality advice, helping them meet their fitness goals more quickly.
Then, and only then, will your client be ready to hug you and praise you. And that’s what it’s all about.
