Six Fitness Marketing Strategies That Don’t Cost a Penny

penny-with-graph-marketingAre you wasting half your paycheck trying to gain clients?

Learn these money-saving strategies to help your marketing success shoot through the roof.

Have you ever heard the saying “it takes money to make money?”

I’ll let you in on a secret: it’s a load of hooey. At least when it comes to fitness marketing.

Right this minute, thousands of personal trainers are convinced they need pricey promotional tactics to stay competitive, and are quickly losing their hard-earned cash as a result. Mail-outs, magazine ads, newspaper listings – not only are these strategies expensive, but they don’t even snag enough clients to keep your business afloat.

Fortunately, a number of free strategies are right at your fingertips. Instead of pouring money into marketing sinkholes, use these no-cost methods to gain the clients you want.

1. Create a blog.

Sure, you can fork over a few grand to get a flashy, professionally designed website for your business. But if you had that kind of money to spare, you probably wouldn’t be reading this article in the first place.

Forget the high-priced homepage. You don’t need it. A blog can attract new prospects, give you a web presence, spread your name online, and keep you connected with current clients – all for free.

Best of all, you don’t need to be a web whiz to run a successful blog. As long as you regularly post fresh content – including health tips, fitness info, and a dash of shameless self-promotion – you’ll create a resource that’s valuable to your readers and lucrative for your business.

2. Offer “bring a friend” training days.

Want to give prospects a free workout without losing time or money? Set up a monthly “bring a friend” session for your clients – and tell them to invite a buddy who wants a killer workout for free. Training two people at once doesn’t slice any time out of your schedule, and a free session might be exactly what you need to convert the friend into a client.

3. Set up a referral web with other health professionals.

Let’s face it: you’re a pro at blasting your clients through mind-blowing workouts, but they have needs you can’t always meet. That stressed-to-the-max executive with stiff shoulders? A massage therapist could loosen him up. That client with recurring back pain? A chiropractor might be just what the doctor ordered – literally.

As a fitness trainer, you’re in the perfect position to network with other professionals whose business complements your own. Create a referral system – chock full of incentives – with nutritionists, masseuses, physical therapists, and any other health professionals who could direct prospects your way. If you weave a well-crafted web of cross referrals, you’ve just opened the door for more clients – without paying a cent for advertising.

4. Advertise on Craigslist.

Why run your ad in high-fee newspapers and magazines when the largest online classifieds site is free?

Devote some time to creating an enticing, benefits-filled ad for your business, and showcase it on Craigslist for the world to see. You’ll be reaching hundreds – if not thousands – of online viewers, and you can repost as often as you want without incurring any costs. Provide your phone number, your e-mail address, or a link to your site, and voila: you’ve created a way for prospects to contact you and didn’t spend a dime.

5. Dive into the sea of social networking.

  • Facebook
  • Twitter
  • LinkedIn

If you haven’t hopped on the social media bandwagon, you’re probably losing business to the thousands of fitness trainers who have. Use networking avenues to usher traffic to your amazing new blog, to advertise discounts and special deals, to promote upcoming seminars, and to post other updates you deem important.

You don’t have to spend hours each day schmoozing on Facebook or deafening your followers with Tweets, but every social utility you join expands your pool of prospects. Used wisely, these networking tools can be boons for your business.

6. Learn a phenomenal way to leverage your time and double your income.
