Fitness Instructor Jobs – Acing the Interview
You found a job opening, submitted an application or resume, and the boss wants to meet you. What now? Your nerves are wracked, because you’re about to be judged, and honestly, who likes to be judged? But you want the job, so you have to suck it up. It helps if you know what to expect and do some preparation in advance.
Dressing the Part
If you met the boss before, which hopefully you did when you handed him or her your application, then you got a sense of how the person was dressed. Your job is to dress one notch higher. If the boss was wearing fitness gear, you can wear khakis. If the boss was dressed in khakis, you need to go for the all-out suit. Whatever you wear, make sure it’s clean and wrinkle-free.
Greeting the Boss
Arrive a little early, but not so early that you interfere with the boss’s day. Five or ten minutes early is perfect. Shake hands firmly, but not aggressively. Smile and make eye contact. And don’t forget to thank the manager for taking the time to see you. If the boss fails to offer you a glass of water, it’s perfectly acceptable to ask for one. Your mouth may already by dry at this point, and if it’s not, it’s likely to get that way soon.
Handling the Questions
This is where a good deal of preparation comes in. Even if you’ve interviewed for a million fitness trainer jobs, you have no idea what this boss will ask. Some hiring managers ask casual questions like, “Are you a good team player?” Of course, the answer to this question is yes. But some hiring managers ask more pointed questions, like, “Tell me about a time when you served on a team. What was your task, and how did it all work out?” You might talk about playing in the local football league. If you really want to impress the boss, talk about that one awesome play you and two other players came up with together, and how it led to a first down in the playoff game.
Not every manager will ask those pointed questions. But let’s go back to the first manager, the one who asked, “Are you a good team player?” You can just say, ‘Yes. Yes, I am.” Or, you can say, “Yes, as a matter of fact I am, and let me give you an example.” Now talk about your football play. If you were the boss, which candidate would impress you more?
So before you go to your interview, sit down and brainstorm a list of things you’ve done in your professional and personal life that shed you in a good light, and that are related to fitness trainer jobs. You could even write a list of keywords (“football play”) that help you remember the story. Then, when the boss asks you the question, you can glance down at your list.
As each question is asked, take your time before you answer. Breathe, formulate and answer in your head, and then start speaking. If you speak without thinking, you may say something you’ll regret later.
Closing the Meeting
The closing is basically a repeat of the opening. Shake hands, smile, make eye contact, and thank the boss for his or her time.
