Better Communication With Your Clients And Peers

Posted By Casey Kaldal

Personal-Trainer-CommunicationAs a personal trainer, your career has been built on your ability to communicate effectively to your clients; how else would they have been able to achieve such fantastic results if not for your constant advice and encouragement? But when it comes to heading up your own personal training business, you’ll need to hone your speaking skills to perfection, as your verbal skills could make or break professional relationships. But don’t stress – here’s a few expert suggestions for increasing your verbal effectiveness that’ll wow both your clients and your professional peers.

Make Eye Contact
Maybe eye contact isn’t stressed as a necessity in communicating with your clients – after all, you can’t exactly face them when they’re doing a push up – but when you’re meeting with professionals, look them in the eye while you’re speaking. If your vision is constantly wandering while talking to a nutritional product supplier, they’re going to perceive you as incompetent…and your relationship will suffer.

Be Aware Of Body Language.
It’s very easy to send mixed messages due to your body language. Think about it this way – would your client respond to encouragement that was delivered with a smile or a frown? People can be very sensitive to body language – make sure you’re aware of it matching your message.

Use Appropriate Speech Volume
Sounds funny, but many trainers who’ve been shouting and cheering all day at work are in danger of carrying that same pitch over to meetings with professional peers. Sure, you’ve been in a gym all day – but your associate has not, and will be disconcerted by an unnecessarily loud voice. Make sure that the volume of your speech is appropriate for the type of setting that you’re in.

Lower Your Voice
Unfortunately, female personal trainers are most vulnerable to this pitfall, as high-pitched voices often conjure up child-like images, which is off-putting to business peers. Make a conscious effort to lower the pitch of your voice when speaking, and you’ll be seen by your peers and clients as more confident and competent.

It’s no secret that effective communication can make or break you, both personally and professionally. But remember: as a personal trainer, you already have a strong foundation for great interpersonal skills! Once you start using these tips, you’ll be able to better understand how to communicate effectively to both your clients and peers, helping you achieve wild success as a business owner.
