Can fighting techniques be used in self defense?

Guest Post

Ah, the age old problem. Millions of people train year round to learn fighting techniques. You would use fighting techniques like MMA and boxing for competition sport. But can these techniques actually be used as proper self defense techniques as well? Let’s take a look at that exact question, and see what we can find out.

First, we’ll look at some of the more common fighting techniques. We’ll first look at the common jab. This is usually followed up by a cross punch, so now we have two staple techniques, the jab and the cross punch. Another common fighting techique is the round house kick. These devastating kicks can temporarily cripple your opponent when delivered properly. These are the three staple fighting techniques we will discuss.

First up, is the jab. Are jabs simply useful only as fighting techniques or do they have a lot of use as a proper self defense technique? Unfortunately these aren’t very practical in self defense situations. You see, jabs are not used as a full out self defense blow but instead as a quick strike in competition sport. In real life, self defense situations are over in a few quick seconds, so a jab will not be very useful.

Next we’ll talk about the cross punch. One example of a very useful fighting technique is cross punches, which can be used as self-defense techniques. This is because a cross punch is a very powerful strike which can take out an attacker very easily. Even the strongest man can go down when hit with one or two properly placed cross punches. So a cross punch can be used as either, making it a good technique to practice.

And last, what about a roundhouse kick? Can roundhouse kicks be used as proper self defense techniques or are they strictly for fighting? Well, the answer is yes and no. Roundhouse kicks to the head can be very dangerous and can potentially put you in a very bad situation. However, an instant fight winner can come in the form of a roundhouse kick to the groin. Just make sure you don’t kick above the belt and you’ll be good to go.

So there you go. As you can see, not all fighting techniques can be used as self defense techniques, but almost all self defense techniques can be used as fighting techniques.
