Are Personal Trainer Jobs a Good Fit for You?

Posted By Casey Kaldal

At the fitness clubWhen you have a passion for fitness and exercise it’s only natural to want to extend that passion into every aspect of your life. Commitment to proper health and nutrition, regular exercise and all around healthy living behaviors can be time consuming, even life consuming. When you’ve devoted the time and energy to build a strong body with six-pack abs and well-defined biceps, the next logical step is to become a personal trainer, guiding others in the path you have so successfully followed.

Is The Professional Fitness Trainer Field For You?

What if you have this drive and don’t quite know where it’s going to take you? Where do you go? How do you begin? How can you be sure this is even the right decision for you?

Finding your niche as a personal trainer will probably begin right in your own gym, the one you’ve been using all along to build that body and learn how to train properly yourself. If your gym is like most, you will find a bulletin board with posters about upcoming training programs or special classes devoted to fitness buffs seeking to expand their horizons in the fitness arena.

Qualifications For Fitness Trainers

Although certification is not a universal requirement to become a personal trainer, you will definitely add to your credibility by attaining certificates in various aspects of training. You will also increase your employment opportunities by being able to boast about your ability to conduct yoga classes or being certified to teach spinning classes. After all, the gym is where you are most likely to begin your career as a personal trainer. Many personal trainers have clientele at several different gym locations and travel between the facilities to their scheduled training sessions.

Some personal trainers have obtained college degrees in physical fitness and education. They may use personal training as a sideline to their primary career as an elementary or high school physed teacher.

Oh, And One More Thing

A good personal trainer is much more than just the guiding force behind the proper method to do sit-ups or the drill sergeant barking out orders to keep you on track. A good personal trainer is a psychologist, counsellor, motivator and friend. They will impart words of wisdom that make you push harder, work longer and strive to reach levels not yet attained. A really good personal trainer will inspire you beyond the gym, beyond the weight bench and into every area of your life.

One of the greatest motivational directives to come from a personal trainer is the admonition to “Push yourself until you fail.” In every area of life, how will you know the limits of what you are capable of accomplishing until you have tried and not succeeded? It’s easy to do what you can do. You’ve done that all along. When someone encourages you to push beyond that comfort zone you will finally begin to see just what you are made of. That’s the polish that makes a personal trainer a vital force in the life of his student.

Do you have what it takes to be a personal trainer of that caliber? That’s the real question you need to answer if you want to find a place for yourself as a personal trainer with a successful fitness business.
